It's the first day of December.
Often times, there's one thing that we think about in December: Christmas.
You've seen it everywhere, haven't you? Stores have discounts leading up to this holiday. You can't look anywhere without seeing a red and green sign. Everyone's talking about it. It's a big thing.
But have you ever seen someone who is rushing around in December to buy all the presents, make all the food, and host all the events for the 25th? On top of that, are they rushing so much that they forget that we are supposed to be celebrating?
You may think that this is not connected to music at all. But I'm going to show you why it is.
They used to be excited and feeling good about themselves, because of all the new knowledge and skills they were getting. Unfortunately, those beginning stages don't last forever.
This music student starts to feel like they are not making any progress. They start wondering why things have changed. Eventually, the person tells you that they are planning on quitting music.
"It's just getting too hard," they say. "I'm playing all these songs, working on all these exercises, and still not making the progress I seemed to before. I'm probably not good enough anyways, because so-and-so was getting world recognition in only a year. So... I'm going to stop."
Disappointing, isn't it? However, there's a way to prevent this. Why don't you say, "Don't you remember how happy you were about it before? You're worrying about being the next big thing so much that you forget that you're supposed to be enjoying this."
...is that we are supposed to have fun doing something that is also enjoyable for our listeners, not because we are hoping to get famous or because we think that we have to.
And the whole point of celebrating Christmas is to be joyful and thankful for the gifts we have been given, not to worry about presents.
So, the next time you're worrying about doing something, think about why that thing started in the first place.
And.... don't forget to let me know what you're celebrating. There's a comment box for a reason.
