There Will Never Be Another You

I think now's a good time to get back to some songs that have been sitting in my folder, waiting to be posted. Here's one that has been there for 2 years.

Listen to the song here

This jazz standard was written for a film named Iceland in 1942. From what I hear on jazzstandards.com, the movie wasn't very successful. Perhaps the song outperformed the film that it originated from, since we still see it now in our standard books, and students still play it with their teachers.

Sometimes I hear complaints about how the world has changed and not as many people are willing to sit down and go to concerts. Now, we need games, movies, shows, and plays to distribute our compositions. But people used to gladly come and hear our concerts in the "good old days," right?

When I look at how many jazz standards were written for musicals and movies, I realize that those were just as important for sharing music as "sitting down at concerts." Sure, in 1942, there were listeners going to clubs to hear jazz, but just as many would have watched films and heard songs like this one.

It's not like there was a time when everyone would go to events just to hear music, and then there was a sudden change after which that ended. So perhaps we should be glad about the musical opportunities that aren't stand-alone performances, rather than looking back on a "better" time that might not have existed.

Keep filling your teacup with music!
