I Want.....

You might think that I'm being delinquent on giving you the old songs - but when I played them 3 years ago, it's hard to think of something to write about them. And today, I didn't even have an old song on my Posting Schedule (which reminds me, I should start planning out my posts for the next few months). And last night, I was already in a pinch. I either had to record and post a song in the last two hours of my evening, or the first two hours of this morning. So, I decided to just throw in one of the songs I'd already written and get on with it.

So, when I wrote this song, it was one of my plans to write a song based on Seven come Eleven. That would have been my second jazz composition since I started writing songs. In case you didn't know why I chose Seven come Eleven as a song to learn, that would be a good opportunity for you to click that link.

When I started writing, I used an old "licks page" that I had made several months back. To make those, I usually just open Musescore (a music notation program), go to the piano, pick some structure elements for the lick (in case you didn't know, a lick is a short musical phrase or idea) like speed, key, chords, basic concept to use, etc., and start playing. After running for a few minutes, I'd eventually come up with a sketch of an idea, and then I'd write it down in Musescore. I'd then keep playing and try to refine the lick into a solid idea.

Later, I'd revisit and restudy the lick when I couldn't think of an idea for a song to write. Four of these licks so far have been used in compositions (but I haven't gotten a chance to post them all yet). The remaining licks will be reserved for later times when I'm feeling like writing another song.

Maybe one of those times is coming up soon. How do you know? The only thing you can do is listen to this song and try to figure out what I want......
