Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a little song by George Frideric Handel called "Aria in B flat Major." This is something for you to listen to as 2021 is coming up. Maybe 2021 will also be a year that's different from all the other ones you've seen. I hope you like listening to it!

The First Noel
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! December 25th has finally arrived, so it's time for another Christmas song called "The First Noel." This is another one of our set of vocal Christmas songs. Even though we're at home during a pandemic, we can still use things like these songs to celebrate the birth of Jesus together. I hope you like listening to it!

Silent Night
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a Christmas song called "Silent Night." The list of Christmas songs is almost done, and since Christmas Eve is often celebrated in the evening, I decided to choose this song for today. If you actually wanted a silent night, you would be sleeping, not listening to this song. I think you just came here because you wanted to celebrate Christmas. I hope you like this song!

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a Christmas song called "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." Christmas seems to be getting closer every day, and a great way to celebrate is with more songs! This is another one of my "Christmas Collaborations" where I have added my voice to the recording. There is also another singer in the recording, so my voice is harmonizing him. We might not be two angels singing, but we can still say, "Glory to the newborn King!" I hope you like listening to it!

Away in a Manger
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a song called "Away in a Manger." This well-known Christmas song actually has two different melodies. You could hear one, the other, or even both depending on what recording you listen to. It's also written in "3 time," unlike some of the other songs that we've done. You could count to 3 while you were playing this song instead of counting to 4. I hope you like listening to it!

Angels We Have Heard on High
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, it's time for a piano and vocal cover of "Angels We Have Heard on High" - a Christmas song that you have probably heard right here on earth. This recording reminded me of what happens when multiple musicians are recording live (something that I haven't done in a while, since Covid is still here). If you don't have specific instructions written out for when to start and end the song, you have to infer what the other musicians are trying to do ... so that's why this recording has three verses instead of 4! I hope you like listening to it!

Mary Did You Know
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! It's time for another Christmas collaboration. Today, we're playing a song called "Mary Did You Know." Perhaps we could empathize with Mary a bit here, since we have a pandemic that's appeared. We don't know what's going to happen, but we can't stop ourselves from moving into the future. I hope you like listening to this song!

O Come All Ye Faithful
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a Christmas song called "O Come All Ye Faithful." Now it's time for the faithful to come! In fact, this song is telling us all to come, even though it's talking about an event that happened thousands of years ago. It's still something worth celebrating for all of us. I hope you like listening to this song!

O Come O Come Emmanuel
It's time for some Christmas songs on Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a song called "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." This year, I've decided to add another singer to my recordings. He will sing the songs while I play the piano. We all know that two is better than one, don't we? I'll be adding more of these in the next few weeks, so be ready to fill up your teacup!

Afternoon in Paris
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz standard by John Lewis called "Afternoon in Paris." He actually recorded the album this song was on in Paris, so connecting the song to the city really was important to him. Although it was written in the 1950s, this song is still considered valuable to jazz musicians' repertoire today. I hope you like listening to it!

Tis Autumn
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz ballad called "'Tis Autumn." Composed by Henry Nemo, it reminded me of the leaves that fall on top of anything you find outside. When winter and then spring come, they're all gone. Could you find something underneath a pile of autumn leaves? I hope you like listening to this one!

A Pittance of Time
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a song called "A Pittance of Time," which was composed by Terry Kelly. He was in a store on November 11th when he noticed a man who refused to observe the 2 minutes of silence to respect war veterans. He managed to hold back his anger that day and direct it into a song instead. It reminds us that 2 minutes is just a "pittance of time" - a small sacrifice to honor those who sacrificed their lives. I hope you like listening to it!

Waltz in Gb
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing another song by Frederic Chopin - this one is a Waltz in Gb major. It turns out that if the instructions in Chopin's will had been followed, this song would never have existed today. Maybe there could be a good reason to not follow someone's instructions ... or is there? I hope you like listening to it!

Desafinado
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz song by Antonio Carlos Jobim called "Desafinado." (It might be better classified as a bossa nova, but since it is often played in an ensemble with improvisation, it could still be considered a jazz song.) According to the title of this song, it's actually meant to be played improperly. Does that mean I'm playing it incorrectly by playing it correctly? I'm not sure how to answer that one, but I hope you like listening to it!

Etude in Eb Major
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a classical song composed by Frederic Chopin called "Etude #11." Chopin was one of the three well-known composers of the time period in which this song was written. These three piano players also happened to have bigger hands than mine, which makes it harder for me to play songs like this one. But why shouldn't you push yourself to the edge of whatever limits you have? I hope you like listening to this song!

Canon in D
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a classical song by Johannes Pachelbel called "Canon in D." While this song is often played at a marriage ceremony, it's still an excellent piece of music to listen to no matter where you are in your life. One of the interesting things about music is that it can be taken out of context and still sound good. I hope you like listening to this one!

A Minor Major
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz song that I composed called "A Minor Major." (That's an indefinite article, not a key.) It has some chord patterns that you might not expect (but, of course, there's still minor and major ones). That's because I wrote the song differently than others, where I used the chords from an existing song. I hope you like listening to it!

Toccata in G Major
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a classical song by J.S. Bach called "Toccata in G Major." A toccata is defined as a piece of music that is written to demonstrate the dexterity of the performer's hands. It's usually written for the piano, so I suppose this was the perfect song for me to play. It also served as a reminder of how composers sometimes make their songs hard to play! Or perhaps these difficult lines actually help musicians develop their skills. I hope you like listening to it!

Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz song called "Joe's Avenue." This one was composed by Wynton Kelly as part of his "Vee Jay Studio Recordings." D Natural Blues
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz song called "D Natural Blues." The composer of this song, Wes Montgomery, decided to write the song in D, because that would work better for him as a guitar player. Today's video is my piano cover of a hymn called "Hosanna, Loud Hosanna." Earlier this week, I was considering how the things we think about are reflected in our actions. Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! On this last day of July, I'm playing a hymn called "Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery." If you've listened to another hymn called "Come Thou Fount," you might recognize this as another song with a long title. I think it sounds pretty similar, too. Does it make a difference if the song has a long title, though? It has a lot to say! I hope you like listening to it, and keep filling your teacup with music!

Twinkle Twinkle - Variations
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! On this hot, hazy, and humid 27th day of the month, I have a song that you've definitely heard before - and probably haven't heard before. On one hand, it's the classic tune "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." On the other hand, it's 12 more ways to play this melody composed by Mozart. Blessed Assurance
Here's another song for Tea with Liya this week. Today, I'm playing a hymn called "Blessed Assurance." We could probably use some assurance now that there's a virus supposedly threatening our lives. It might not look like there's any hope right now, but giving up on hope isn't going to make the world any better. In fact, it's only going to make our own futures worse. I hope you like listening to the song!

Nocturne in A flat Major
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a classical song called "Nocturne," composed by Samuel Barber. If this is your first time listening to the song, it probably won't sound much like a nocturne to you. Perhaps there's a thunderstorm in the middle of the night... who knows? I think that this song has a lot of contrast in it that would be worth noticing. I hope you like listening to it!

Welcome back to Tea with Liya! My piano cover this week is a contemporary worship song called "Build Your Kingdom Here." My Romance
Today's song on Tea with Liya is a jazz ballad called "My Romance." The lyrics are saying that the singer doesn't need his relationships to be all flowery with stars in the sky, just like the love stories he always hears. Perhaps we should apply that too and appreciate the good things we do have, instead of expecting the world to be perfect. I hope you like listening to this song!

Walkin' Shoes
Here's a jazz song for Tea with Liya this week. My second post will be coming out on Friday, so you won't have to wait too long. This song, "Walkin' Shoes," was composed by Gerry Mulligan, who played the baritone saxophone. The instrument makes the song sound different, perhaps more like "walking." I hope you like it!

July has arrived! This is my second song for Tea with Liya this week. It's called "Rhythm-A-Ning," a jazz piece composed by Thelonious Monk. It's based on the harmony of the "rhythm changes," which came from George Gershwin's piece "I've Got Rhythm." I hope you like it!

Peri's Scope
It's time for more music on Tea with Liya! Today's song is a bouncy jazz piece called "Peri's Scope." While writing my post, I was thinking about how the song repeats melodic phrases to make it more cohesive. I hope you like listening to it!

Great is Thy Faithfulness
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! In a week we're going to be halfway through the year. On this last Wednesday of June, I thought it would be a good time to publish a hymn called "Great is Thy Faithfulness." I hope you like this piano cover!

Watch What Happens
Here's a second song I have for Tea with Liya today. I have a few songs lined up on my list, so I decided to post two this week. This jazz song is called "Watch What Happens." Maybe that was a good song to learn earlier this year, considering how quickly things have changed. I hope you like listening to it!

Bouncing with Bud
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! On this sunny Wednesday, I'm playing "Bouncing with Bud," a jazz song composed by Bud Powell. It may already have 74 years in the books, but I think it's still a song worth listening to. I hope you like it!

All the Things You Are
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! In this post, I'm playing a song called "All the Things You Are," composed by Jerome Kern. If you've listened to a lot of jazz standards, you've almost certainly heard of this one. The song has made it to a lot of lists of "Jazz Standards for Beginners" and "Songs Everyone Needs to Know." I hope you like it!

B Minor Waltz
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! It seems like only a couple days since May started. In this post, I'm playing the song "B Minor Waltz" composed by Bill Evans. I also have some things to say about strengths and weaknesses. I hope you enjoy the song!

Ballade (Slave)
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! On this mid-May morning, I've uploaded a song called "Ballade," a romantic-era piece composed by Claude Debussy. While learning the song, I noticed some interesting things about how it was written. I hope you like listening to it, too!

A Child is Born
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! It's the middle of May, but I'm still waiting for temperatures to qualify as spring. In the meantime, I recorded this song called "A Child is Born." It got me thinking about some things that remain the same even when others change. Thanks for coming to listen!

Monk's Dream
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! Today, I'm playing a jazz song called "Monk's Dream," which was named after its composer, Thelonious Monk. In my blog post, I'm also talking about some happy numbers we can find during the pandemic - and maybe happy dreams, too! Thanks for coming to listen!

Dance (Juba)
Welcome to another week of social distancing! Here on Tea with Liya, I'm playing a song that will hopefully brighten your day. "Juba Dance", composed by R. Nathaniel Dett, was based on an African American dance from the 1800s. Even while these slaves were in forced working conditions, they were still able to keep up the joy by singing and dancing. Hopefully you'll take some inspiration during the times of COVID!

Come Thou Fount
On this Wednesday that leaves us right in the middle of April, I'm here to play another hymn called "Come Thou Fount." This song got me thinking about looking for good news even when we're surrounded by reports of Corona. I hope you enjoy listening!

Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Today on Tea with Liya, I'm playing a jazz standard called "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Believe it or not, I wasn't thinking about coronavirus lockdowns when I picked this song - I didn't consider that until later. If you're stuck inside looking for something to do, I'm glad you took the time to listen to this song. Keep filling your teacup with music!

Be Thou My Vision
This week on Tea with Liya, I'm playing a classic hymn called "Be Thou My Vision." If you haven't been hearing this in a church for 50 years, you might not have imagined that this song has existed for several centuries. Age doesn't make it any less valuable, though - here I am playing it in 2020!

Count Two
While listening to the radio, I heard this jazz piece, composed by pianist Oliver Jones, called "Count Two." I soon decided to learn it, and I've now uploaded it to Tea with Liya. Here, you can find out about some other things you can count! I hope you like this song!

River Flows in You
If any of you know of a contemporary pianist who calls himself Yiruma, then you probably discovered his music through this song. Likely his most popular composition, "River Flows in You" has been played by both professionals and piano students. When I first heard an actual performance of this piece, it didn't sound like what I had first imagined, but maybe I was confusing it with another song that had "river" in its title. Anyways, enough of Liya's Reminiscent Thoughts on Music. It's time for you to Listen to the song here!

Pineapple Rag
Welcome back to Tea with Liya! On this cold February morning, I took a little time to think about the coming summer. A great song that references this hot and bright season would be Scott Joplin's "Pineapple Rag." I hope you enjoy listening to this bouncy song. Can sound waves make you feel warmer?

Misty
Thanks for coming back to Tea with Liya! Today's song is a ballad called "Misty," composed by jazz pianist Erroll Garner in 1954. Considering his recording, I thought that it might work well as a solo piano song, so I decided to record it. I hope you enjoy listening!

My Favorite Things
Oof! It's already going to be February in a couple of days - and considering that 2020 just started (I still have to stop myself from saying 2019), the year is definitely getting off to a fast start. At the times when I'm not moving from one task to the next, I can remember my favorite things - or write a post about the song, My Favorite Things! I hope you enjoy listening to this popular song, that I successfully turned into a jazz song. John Coltrane could do it, so why can't I?

A new Mercy Mercy Mercy
Welcome back to the Roaring Twenties! Umm... why are you looking at me like that? No one misses out on the Roaring Twenties, because they happen every century! This one's even better, because there are two 20s! To kick off the New Year, I'm bringing you a new version of a previously published jazz tune, called "Mercy Mercy Mercy." I made some changes to the way I play it, and this recording has less noise than the previous one. I hope that you like this one!
