Where did the year go?

Whoa!! What happened to 2018?!?!

If you're asking that question, that's one of the things we have in common. (Other than an interest in music, which you wouldn't be here without.) I feel like the year went by pretty fast. From one post to the next isn't that much time, and there's only 52 Wednesdays, one of which is already behind us, before another year passes.

The rate at which time passes can 'seem' to change. When you're really looking forward to Christmas break, the time seems to drag and drag and drag and drag on forever. But by the time you feel like you've had a break, it's nearly over.

You usually feel like you're stuck in the periods of time you don't want, but if you stared at the clock all that time, the second hand would always move at the same rate. It's just the way we think about things.

We also think about things differently when we listen to songs.

If you just went and listened to a random song...

Let's say that there was a concert in which almost every kind of music would get played. Think of any song you've ever heard - something like it would be played at the concert.

You and hundreds of other people sign up for the performance. Whenever a song is played, you're all asked to go to the back and rate the music from 1 to 5. At the end of the show, everyone gets to see which songs were liked the most.

But if you could go and look at what songs everyone liked, you'll find that perhaps one person liked the classical and rock songs but hated the jazz. Another one likes bounce and swing but mostly old songs. Everyone will have a different opinion about each song. (And they'll probably say that the "good" songs were too short and the "bad" ones dragged on forever.)

Additionally, some people might be doing something else while music was playing, and others are deeply analyzing the song - trying to figure out what this guitar player was doing, or how this part of the song connects to that one.....

The same thing would happen with your Christmas break.

Maybe someone has a program they're partaking in that they really like, but it ends in the middle of December and doesn't come back till the middle of January. This person would like having some time to relax, but also disappointed that they have to wait a month.

Meanwhile, the person who doesn't like their work is looking forward to Christmas like there's no
tomorrow.

In short, there's a lot of different perspectives people can have at different times in their life. There often isn't a right or wrong, but when it comes to time passing, one year is only 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days. Those days don't speed up or slow down, unlike a song.

Which reminds me, today is going to be over soon. What should I listen to today?
